St Mary’s Church opens after renovations

St Mary’s Church in the Square opened its doors for the first time in two months for 10.30am Mass on Saturday, giving parishioners their first glimpse of the work. With a brand-new tiled floor, a coat of fresh paint everywhere and plenty of other new additions to its appearance, it’s been a long time since St Mary’s looked better.

The project was overseen by Listowel Parish Priest Canon Declan O’Connor and carried out by a local building firm under the expert eye of foreman Danny McElligott.

Listowel’s old Protestant Church and secondary school St Michael’s College stood in for the parish church over the past two months. Weekday Masses took place in St John’s old Protestant Church (since deconsecrated by the Church of Ireland) in the centre of the Square with the big weekend Masses and funerals taking place in St Michael’s.

However, some families opted for neighbouring parishes for funerals during the renovations. Parishioners were delighted to return to St Mary’s on Saturday however as many commented on the quality of the work carried out.
